What utility locating is

Utility locating involves detecting, identifying and marking the position of underground services such as power cables, gas mains, water and sewer pipes, and communications lines before any excavation begins.

Done properly

It protects workers, prevents accidental damage to critical infrastructure and keeps your project on schedule.

Skipped or rushed

It exposes your construction site to safety risks, costly damage and project delays that are entirely avoidable.

Delivering certainty before breaking ground is what we do.

Our promise to customers is the provision of complete underground asset locating services, from ground penetrating radar through to the physical location of utilities. Build an accurate picture of the underground assets beneath your site, plan properly, and dig safely.

Our Services

Five in-house capabilities

Vacuum Excavation

Non-destructive digging that uses high pressure water and vacuum equipment to expose underground services safely. There are no buckets and no blind digging, just controlled exposure of the utility so its depth, alignment and condition can be confirmed before heavy plant moves through the area.

Potholing Services

Targeted, precise exposure of individual underground utilities to positively identify them in the ground. Potholing verifies exactly what sits below before trenching, boring or piling is carried out, giving you Quality Level A information at the points where it matters most.

High Pressure Gas Supervision

Working near high pressure gas infrastructure in Western Australia is tightly regulated. Any work within 15 metres requires ATCO approval, and work within 5 metres must be overseen by an ATCO approved High Pressure gas supervisor. Our supervisors are authorised to act on ATCO's behalf and assist contractors through drilling, excavation, hot works, compaction, dewatering and more.

Ground Penetrating Radar

Ground penetrating radar extends our underground locating services beyond what conventional electromagnetic methods can detect, picking up non-conductive pipes such as PVC and poly, along with voids and other subsurface anomalies. It is a key tool for building a complete picture of the underground services on a site before any ground is disturbed.

Concrete Scanning

Before you cut, core or drill into a slab, you need to know what is inside it. Our concrete scanning identifies rebar, post-tension cables, conduits and embedded services, protecting your workers, your equipment and the structural integrity of the slab.

A Certified Locating Organisation You Can Rely On

Listed on the CERTLOC register

Pulse Locating is a Certified Locating Organisation listed on the CERTLOC register (formerly DBYD Certification). CERTLOC tests and assesses professional locating technicians against a minimum industry standard, so certification gives clients confidence that their service locating is being carried out by qualified personnel, not guesswork.

That formal certification, backed by our team’s practical expertise working around underground networks since 2009, is what separates a reliable locate from a line of paint on the ground.

Our process

From Plans to Proof

Most projects need more than one of these capabilities, applied in the right order.

01

Plans and BYDA

A typical engagement starts with a Before You Dig Australia request and a review of existing service plans.

02

Detection

Electromagnetic service locating and ground penetrating radar then confirm what is actually in the ground, which often differs from the records.

03

Verification

Where certainty is critical, potholing or vacuum excavation physically exposes the service so its exact location and depth can be recorded.

04

Supervision

And if the works sit near high pressure gas assets, our supervisors keep the job compliant from start to finish.

Because our team delivers the whole process in-house, nothing gets lost between detection and excavation, and you deal with one accountable point of contact. That is how underground risk gets managed efficiently, without the delays and rework that come from juggling multiple providers.
